Rezension: Microsoft® Manual of Style
Diese Rezension ist in englischer Sprache verfasst, weil das O’Reilly Blogger Review Program einen internationalen Interessentenkreis anspricht.
Technical writers, bloggers and podcasters want to share information. To reach their audience, they need to express their thoughts in a way that is both consistent and a pleasure to read or to listen to. Of course, the information being presented must be valid, correct and true. Beyond that, the message must be presented well: authors have to choose the right tone and use the right vocabulary. At a more advanced level, certain sentence structures, words and phrases should be avoided.
Microsoft Manual of Style can help you achieve that. As the title suggests, it was created at Microsoft and is used there, too. Of course, a lot of technical terms refer to the Windows operating system or other Microsoft products (Office, Windows Phone). But lots of suggestions on wording, sentence structure and overall style are valuable to writers outside the Microsoft ecosystem, too. For example, the chapter Content for the Web adresses legal considerations and shows you how to help the user find content. Content for a worldwide audience also covers legal considerations, as well as name and contact information, international currency, time and place.
I would suggest any technical writer to take a closer look. The only thing I think is missing: a REAL hypertext version.
